I'm sure everyone gets a lemon now and then with any product, but my Epson R1800, which I have been using nearly everyday for three years hasn't had a glitch--ever! I do the simple maintenance of auto headcleaning about one every two weeks; I leave the printer on ALL the time--it uses about 5 watts or less of electricity in that mode--I've even used non-epson cartridges (black only-don't tell epson!)and I've yet to encounter a single problem. I keep the feeding tray and output tray closed when not in use to avoid dust, and follow all the directions. Some prints I've made have been shown in galleries. So I have to give this contraption 5 stars. A not so insider secret: according to specs I've read by a photo guru, epson engineering creates an optimum image at 288 ppi; that seems about right to me. Going denser doesn't seem to have an effect visually. If you can afford an updated epson or want better B&W, maybe you could go for the 2400 (I think). If all my equipment was this reliable! -- I don't work for Epson by the way. NOTE: I have found that it's beginning to get a bit difficult to get the epson cartridges for it, but they are still relatively popular, and if you know where to shop -- that big auction website -- you can get some good deals.
