A previous poster had the gall to refer to the negative reviews as coming from "ignorant people". That takes some chutzpah, I think, because I must be one of those "ignorant people", then:
The HP 3940 is very cheaply made, which is why it retails for so little -- and which is why it is so unreliable. I have experienced many if not all the same problems as the other posters here (I didn't read all of the reviews), both with this printer and two similar ones (all HP). It's an OK choice for simple, light use but nothing else. For example, it will not load Avery card stock correctly (business cards, post cards). 9/10 times it's off by 1/2 to 1/4 inch -- and the hard copy doesn't quite match the screen template. Even if you do get the sheet to load right, the bottom row is significantly off the mark. If you need precision printing, forget it!
It fares better with regular paper but only as long as there's a good 10 to 15 sheets in the tray. Below that, the printer will not load straight and you end up with crumpled paper, if it comes out at all. Every now and then (maybe 1 in 5) the paper will manage to lift the front cover as it exits, thereby causing the printer to pause and the paper to not exit all the way. Yes, this is more of an annoyance than a serious problem.
Resolution-wise, it is not bad. I have printed some photos and they look OK. Not as good as from a photo lab but better than expected. Again with the paper: if you're loading 4x6 sheets, make sure the tray is full of regular paper first. Otherwise, your 4x6 will go in crooked.
Conclusion: it works, usually, but don't expect much beyond simple, basic letter printing.
