I was very excited to order this mouse because it had all the features I wanted: ergonomic shape, wheel with tilt, two side buttons and a cord. Like some other posters, I prefer a wired mouse for day to day work and was frustrated that all the highest rated mice on the web seem to be wireless these days. I was happy to find this mouse because I had owned a 3.0 a couple years ago and I loved it. However this mouse arrived with a defective scroll wheel. I had to scroll really fast in order to get any scroll acknowledged by the system, and even then it would jerk the page down or up a bit, then go back to not working. I tried the mouse on Windows 7, Vista and finally XP before giving up on it.
While I tested it, my hand started to ache. Maybe that's because I was spinning the scroll wheel so furiously, but really I suspect that the shape was not suited for my hand. Some write that they love the shape, so this may only be a matter of personal preference. The mouse also seemed hollow and light. I probably could have gotten used to this mouse, if the scroll wheel worked. One other reviewer wrote that you have to keep the pointer perfectly still in order to scroll. I wish I had known this before returning the mouse today, because I would have tested it. However, even if this was true, I don't think it's reasonable to require the user to hold the mouse perfectly still in order to get the scroll wheel to work. You shouldn't have to think about it at all, it should just work.
I searched the web and I found a good alternative to this mouse. The Logitech M500 has the same price as the Intellimouse 4.0 and s all the same features, plus a couple of upgrades (it has a laser sensor instead of optical, and it has a clutch that can switch between free and precision scrolling styles.) I didn't have the clutch on my list of wants, but now that I've tried it, I really like the feature. I recommend the M500 to anyone looking for an alternative to the Intellimouse 4.0.
